I missed it at the time, but Jesse Gress, longtime guitarist with Todd Rundgren died last Feb. He had a lung transplant in 2020. As well as a performing musician, he also was a teacher. I saw him once with Todd in 2007. RIP

May The Yo-Yo Man, political folksinger and very bright and happy point in my childhood Tommy Smothers' valuable energy shift to a place where it can do a lot of good for the Universe. Oh, the laughter! I made sure to pass it along to my children. As a matter of fact, my daughter was the one who let me know of Tommy Smothers' passing this morning. Their political humor was also inspirational. I'll never forget you.

It's hard to communicate what an important cultural icon their Sunday show was in these days of so much content. George Carlin as the Hippie Dippy Weatherman, Share a Little Tea with Goldie, wink wink, and lots of great musical guests. It was on their show that Keith Moon underestimated the amount of explosives to use at the end of their song and permanently damaged Pete's hearing (that part wasn't great.) Kicked off the air despite high ratings, Tom said it was Nixon's demand to CBS.
I first heard their records through a schoolmate whose parents had them, before their program and wider exposure. RIP

Hey guys I got a question I've certainly heard of the smothers Brothers before but I'd obviously didn't grow up at the time to watch them. I did take a brief look at some of the clips you guys shared. But either being dense or maybe it's just not in these I thought they were known for their slip it past the sensors kind of double entender and political satire. Is that correct? Is there a clip that demonstrates that and whatever was typical of them that you might point out so I could see. I remember hearing about them and soupy sales from my mother.

Bluedemon, This video from a few years back is a nice capsulation of their television career and witty subversion. (timestamp 2:55 - 3:05) is a bit from one of their shows that was considered risqué for the day Few performers were brave enough or clever enough to push against media censorship. As miles stated, Nixon's influence (and conservatives in general) had a lot to do with the brothers' Smother from speaking truth too loudly to power to the masses.
And here's a great song with a compatriot of theirs, George Segal

This is clear thank you

The Draft Doger Rag was written and originally performed by Phil Ochs, another performer suppressed because of his politics.
More Smothers Bros memories. Officer Judy, Pat Paulsen for President, Grace Slick performing Greasy Heart in blackface. Pete Seeger had been banned from TV after the red scare. Having him sing Big Muddy, an unabashed anti-war song with them, was daring at the time.

I find it comforting(?) that someone who has been out of the limelight for so many years, now in death has the power to uplift and promote a sense of camaraderie. Dick & Tommy may have been raising their voices against a different war but the current manufactured cultural variety is dangerous as well.

Yeah, I was trying to go with the ones that were more my childhood memories, those that I didn't seem to notice or went over my head. I noticed them when I was going through a whole lot of the YouTube vids, though. I was "Huh. This isn't the version on the albums we had."
