like many jazz musicians i spent years in a debilitating obsession with chords, chords and more chords; it was an essential part of my recovery that i learn to write songs without any chords at all. and it is also difficult to single out a chord anyway, as they mean so much more in sequence. to my ears the most striking harmonic content in the music of xtc has always been the multiple guitars playing different chords simultaneously in combinations that are illegal, or at least unexpected. instances of this are too numerous to count, but one thing that always kills me is the beginning of "optimism's flames", those thick slabs that come around every three measures over the four-measure bass line. i just love that.
bluedemon25: No ones going to comment on the new Colin song/music video out? I liked it. I know it's not about puns, body parts, or sports, but I thought it'd get excited mention from someone.
