A pastor told me this story: family of the deceased wanted to have elvis’ ‘love me tender’ playing as people gathered for the funeral.
The funeral home sound guy didn’t hear that right and played ‘return to sender’ instead.

Posted on the XTC Reddit page a while back: Me: Casey Kasem's American Top 40 and Disco were the most listened to music of that period. It was on the Radio, on the TV, played in Clubs and over at your friends' house because their older sister/brother listened to it. I don't know anything about Reddit, so no comment there.

If I remember correctly, the poster suggested a lack of touring combined with shitty videos were more to blame for the band's lack of commercial success. I would add in their terrible management.

First successful single that charted was Making Plans for Nigel released 22.09.1979. Follow up single Wait Till your Boat goes Down released 6 months later. Why there would be a 6 month gap between those records and Boat chosen as the follow up is beyond me. XTC got loads of TV coverage and music paper coverage. I think they were badly managed obviously and the the group members were naive. And as they got more control the band imploded. Such is life.

Did they have any real appreciable following after the Helium Kids local TV appearances or was that just in th know for those in Swindon only?

From 1977 they began to build a sizable UK following and had their fair share of TV and media coverage during the punk/new wave era. I went to see them in 1977 and they had a good following. As the next few years progressed venues and audiences significantly increased.
