Misanthrope: One who hates or mistrusts humankind. Yep I can live with that. 🐧 You change from misanthrope to mistletoe minded just before Christmas. Cheers! It is slim pickings when it comes to searching for back porches decorated for Chrimbo. Please imagine this to be ours.

Whats the difference between a back porch and a deck in one's "garden"/backyard? Not a joke I'm asking. Minr arent coveres via a roof structure but i got a lower deck and a 2nd floor from the bedroom one. No deck-o-rations (would a porch have porch-o-rations?). Can they still count as a back porch if I or people hang out there. Too bad none of you seem to be northeasterners to visit for a beer or tea.

Yes, I agree. I would actually go outside for that! We would be noisy, jovial, sometimes bawdy porch gatherers, to be sure, no matter where we are! These parameters are in my mind and may not be architectural realities...porches are attached to the house.. They are covered by the roof or are under an extension of the roof itself. They can be front, back or side. They are on the foundation or maybe built out from it, but are raised in some way. A patio is a concrete pad, firmly on the ground and may be an extension of a foundation. It is a place to hang out in nice weather, day or night. I like to be outside when it is raining, so I would appreciate a roof as opposed to a slatted wood covering like the one I had. It doesn't help keep the heat in the house if you are standing in an open doorway so you can listen to the rain and breathe the fresh air. We get storms that aren't that cold, so it is nice to be out by the garden where you can hear the gentle patter of raindrops and see your garden being rinsed and nourished. I guess I'm pining a bit. Bluey, you have an open air outdoor gathering/entertainment area. There are nice things you can do to provide shade, other than trees. There are some pretty big umbrellas in different shapes, now-one of my neighbors has two umbrellas crammed together in a postage stamp sized yard. At first I thought WTF? Now, I am inclined to think they did a pretty good job making most of their yard shady. The sun on concrete or asphalt makes the neighborhood pretty hot. Decks are made of wood or something resembling wood but more durable. I like this option...Sun Shade or Privacy Sails.

We could put some lights up-the Disneyland-ish little white ones can stay up all year and provide a little glow along the roof eaves and around the Sail supports. It could work.

Deck is it is. The constant barrage of acorns would protest a light-shade, but let them.

Gives me a Field of Dreams thought. If I build it (Tiki bar with lots of beer and such) will he/they come?

Merry fucking Christmas sounds like a lot less trouble than Merry fucked up Christmas does. At least with the former things could go either way...the latter indicates doom is expected.

The former or the latter? It depends upon your preferences, you know? Maybe you prefer, perhaps you do not.
It could indicate the person doing the wishing is in his or her cups and unable to do anything but offer and pass out.

I wish us all, misfits, fuck-ups and ordinary people merry Christmas (don't give me that "Holidays" shit). I may check in, I may not, as my aged mother is deciding whether to die before or after the Great Day and I shall be mostly with her. Largely out of wi-fi range. Hope it's happy and bright (enough) for you all. XX

Oh, bimble! I wish you a Merry Christmas and thank you for your wishes. Life goes on, Christmas or not. Aging parents are sad experiences and I dread what may approach for my own kids. However, there are still times to stop and think about happier times, past Christmases where our hearts were warmed by life experiences with our parents, friends and siblings. Sometimes, our friends become our families and if so we were and are fortunate to have them. Bimble, I consider you a friend and wish you a nice Crimbo and a Good New Year!
