Hello all. It will be fine. Do the hygiene stuff. You will almost certainly not die. I work in a supermarket. Apparently I am now a Frontline Worker. Never saw myself as the heroic sort Hurr Hurr. Errrr: everyone happy? XX Hi, bimble. You most certainly are on the frontline, and I thank you for your bravery in the face of such a hysterical group of people as I have never seen before. As a manager-like woman yelled when I was out purchasing a couple rolls of paper towels in a Smart & Final about ten days ago..."No fighting! If you start fighting, we kick you all out, lock the doors and call the police. And we already have done it once!" It was a surprise to hear that, but I knew she meant it. In times where all people face such an invisible threat, regular people do extraordinary things because they know they need to do so. I am sure you have that strength within, bimble. Besides, you will have the chance to say "It's quiet. Too quiet." in the trenches of your supermarket. Have your mask at the ready!

From the Onion, precariously close to truth: BALTIMORE—Warning that the nation was unprepared to deal with the fallout of the global pandemic, researchers from Johns Hopkins University told reporters Friday they worried that Covid-19 would overwhelm America’s GoFundMe system. “GoFundMe is the bedrock of the American healthcare system, and as the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rapidly spread, we fear the servers just won’t be able to take it,” said research director Dr. Monica White, who stressed that if the pandemic were to grow any worse, there simply would not be enough $5 and $10 donations from sympathetic strangers to go around. “...We recommend that if anyone is suffering from minor financial strife such a medical debt from the cost of insulin or cancer treatment, you defer to those diagnosed with Covid-19.” Satire, the highest form of humor, cuts with a sharp knife. Too close to the truth and hitting a nerve, I'd say.

Fleeting visit bimble? Or are you taking up residency? How's Facebook these days? I should imagine I'll be around for a while! I don't do the XTC facebook pages, and most of my small group of FB friends are remaining sanguine!

I've seen nothing like the situation you've described. Most people coming into the store are maintaining a sense of humour, shopping fairly sensibly and carrying on much as normal. None of them admit to stockpiling, though they do come in early (we open at 6) and all the toilet rolls and bread are gone by about 9am..... Hey ho, it'll all be over by Christmas!

I'm too lazy to panic. It takes up too much energy.

And I just talk bollocks. So pretty much the same as it ever was. Welcome home. Come on in and shut that door - Andy Peters and Lee Mack ft. Larry Greyhound. See! RIDICULOUS!!!!

Those smart-ass bastard economists say the toilet paper shortage is just a problem of supply. Stores keep a limited supply, in a panic shoppers overbuy but the usage doesn't change, so eventually those who overbought will still have their supply and the new supply will be sufficient.
This is different than hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies because those are also at a heightened usage.
in the meantime, our COUNTY has issued a stay-at-home order because our Trump-stooge governor refuses to do much. Granted, Florida only has the third largest population in the U.S. with the largest percentage of elderly - so it's not as if we have anything to WORRY about.
My office is a state government office (slagging off on the boss!) so is deemed essential and staying open- but not to the public, but I think I'll move toward working from home part-time soon. I have no symptoms but this whole thing is stressful, I need to get home and relax.

Good luck Ned. It's a messy situation made worse by continual ambiguous official communications.

My first shopping mission in a week. Pre-sanitized carts lined up in front. Grocery is restocked on some things, like the sardines my wife likes and I got some dried split peas to make soup. They were out of some things that were there last time, especially paper products. Half of the meat counter was empty, but overall plenty of food. The cashiers are all wearing face shield things, like transparent welders' masks, very space age. That would stop you from touching your face at least. Much less crowded after the initial panic, people are calm and friendly, lots of smiles and bemused expressions.
We are now under a statewide stay at home order, except to buy food and medicine, banks and gas stations are open too.

Errrr: everyone happy? XX My son works in a grocery store and my husband works for Walmart (ASDA in the UK) which has grocery also. Yes, it's odd that both these people are now considered Essential Workers. Wow, I'd never thought I'd see the day we said that. We've said the same things ourselves. My husband has worked for Walmart for almost 40 years now so all of this is surreal. I just wish there were some better protection for them working in the public like this. My son got a $2 pay bump during all of this but they'll take it away when things get back to normal. My husband doesn't get one since he's management. It's all just a bit surreal. More than a bit.

The Hoarding and Panic Buying
Mr. Suzi saw this first hand. It was crazy. He was tasked one of the first nights last week with manning the toilet paper. Again, I never in my life thought I'd see loo roll be the most wanted item on the planet but here we are. He stood there as it was put out, handed people their limit of 2 packages and prayed that people stayed sane an orderly .... or no one punched him. He came back home with all his teeth intact minus some sanity. Friday, he had to stand at the checkouts policing how much people were buying and confiscate what you had if you were over the limit. One guy got ugly wth him but just verbally. As he told me when he came home .... 'there are signs all over, fuckwad .... don't tell me you didn't know we had limits on items.' 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Yesterday was the first day the store opened with amended hours .... 7 to 8am is for seniors and those with disabilities to shop first for their safety as the store will be completely clean and sanitary. Mr. Suzi had to let them in, have staff help them shop if needed and shoo those away trying to get in that weren't seniors.
I don't even work there and I've taken to drinking regularly in the evening. If this keeps up, I'll need some rehab.
Thanks for listening.
