All my vinyl is scratched and the sleeves pretty messed up too. Don't even know where my records are now. Mostly in the loft. I've had so much fun out of my records. And the chips and the scratches show that. This is Pop! Get yer' discs out Don...and enjoy them some more. They already are. Why else do you think Don is such a backache most of the time?

Those pops and crackles are what gives it character...as you say..it's been played and enjoyed... Get yer' discs out Don...and enjoy them some more. If only I had something decent to play them on. All reasonably priced turntables have been rubbish and returned. Plus where do you put it and the piles of discs too? I do get some of my records out now and again just to look at the sleeves and coloured vinyl. The beauty of that disappeared with CDs. Watched a TV show the other day that was talking about cassette tapes making a comeback. Blimey! What are we supposed to play them on?

Yes with the cassettes perhaps I'm being unreasonably grumpy but it seemed rather like hipster b******* to me. I'm not audio savvy like many of the people who post on the Hoffman Forums but I've picked up on that CDs are often mastered poorly with compression and so on although that's just a trend and not that they have to be but I sure find them convenient and usually not sounding that awful to my ears. Perhaps it's just because I don't have some groovy super expensive audio equipment but rather Antiquated stuff but the limits on CD frequencies haven't so far negatively impacted my listening experience enjoyment . I find CDs more convenient than a stack of large fragile vinyl records that degrading quality through use. I remember the frustration with cassette tapes spooling out I can't imagine wanting to go back to that crap.

I like records largely for the "active listening" aspect. The John Prine album I got has the full lyrics sheet and generous liner notes/short essays. So, while I listened to the album I dedicated myself to the experience.
I still haven't finished my Aesop Rock record because it's a little more of a task to fully engage in his albums, and that one in particular is heavy on concept and story line. Slightly annoyingly, it doesn't have a lyrics "sheet" (it'd have to be 4-8 pages though, probably) so I also need to get genius.com up on a screen to follow along.
And I'm over scratches and pops. When I was younger, I just considered it something you had to live with... and largely bought comedy albums because it didn't matter much. But now, well, I just took out my old copy of Highway 61 Revisited and couldn't stand how scratchy it was.
And I'm not a complete snob. If a record sounds no better than a CD, I'll admit it. I actually did buy another album this past month, I kinda forgot about it. I bought the Temple of the Dog album. Great album, the grunge album for people who don't like grunge. But, I got through it and realized that there was nothing special about it compared to my CD/ digital tracks. So, I'm going to resell it (which was actually one of the reasons I got it, on the resale market, it goes for twice as much as I got it for).
As for affordable players, get an Audio-technica 120---- model. The only drawback for a casual listener is that it does not have an auto-stop function. Completely manual. The reasoning is that the mechanisms that go in a tone arm to make it auto-stop also weigh down the tone arm, possibly causing damage to the records you play.

I can appreciate the vinyl format for the larger especially when gate-fold style visual and physical aspect. I did like to hold and look at the art and any liner notes when listening. I still have all my vinyl at my parents, in my old room, not having room here for hundreds of records. Nonetheless, at least some cds offer more than a cover although it seems increasingly scarce, but when they do I like to look at/read them as I listen.
I wish I could afford that crazy expensive laser based record player. I think the market is for the super wealthy only. I just can't deal with the fragility of the material that could either break with my being a bit of a klutz or degrade through play when I can't personally hear the difference with my setup. Plus the size it takes up and having to get up to manually change tracks again and again if I want a repeat listen.

I had been slightly looking forward to Record Store Day for the first time this past year because I saw what was apparently a misleading news piece from one of my favored 90's bands. According to an early list and announcement, Belly was going to release an album of B-sides and rarities on RSD (drop 1). So I kept it in the back of my mind. The day before I scoped out the store that I had never been to and that night I double-checked the list to see if there was anything else I should grab, only to find it wasn't listed at all. SO I went, but I didn't bother lining up early. The store guys had no idea about it. Later figured out it was only released in the UK through Rough Trade. A "standard" edition has been backlisted for months by a little boutique label that makes albums according to a "vote." Hopefully I can get it someday...but really, now that I think about it, I don't think much would be added by putting it on vinyl, so I might search out a CD option instead.
I picked up a comp called "Songs For You" that's pretty good. Black artists, made to benefit black-owned record stores. Roberta Flack's "What's Going On" cover is great.
Then I just picked up a couple others from the regular stacks. Sufjan Stevens' "Michigan" (with bonus track I hadn't heard before) and Tom Waits "Real Gone" which was remixed for the release. That was years ago, but I never got around to picking it til now. Despite being such a big fan, it's the first TW vinyl I own- partially because the one I would really want is "Rain Dogs"- but they're new pressing went out of print.

Ned, any chance you could pick it up at a non-obscene marked up price from discogs.com? I read on another music forum that others were having similar issues with a different RSD release , I think it was The Who's expanded 40th Anniversary Face Dances vinyl, and a number of members had luck getting it on discogs for a reasonable price.

Belly? At this point, I doubt it. I think it was a low run...
The base price isn't bad, but only UK/Euro sellers have it, so the shipping is more than the cost. If I was a super fan, maybe.
Rain Dogs wasn't a RSD album, I may pay up for it some day. One of my favorite albums ever.

Some new cassette decks are being made, mostly absolute crap. This bloke's channel is kinda fun. A sort of historical review of old tech formats and machines with comparisons to new. Very English sort of passive-aggressive politeness in his reviews. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd9S9eCtMQcIf you go into some of his videos on cassettes you find that cassettes were actually closing the quality gap, but it would have taken a lot of people being committed to upgrading everything... but the new cassette market isn't actually taking advantage of tech to make better cassettes and cassette machines, it's completely nostalgia. They Might Be Giants, for complete novelty's sake, are pressing their new album "Book," on cassette, and a VERY limited amount on 8-track tape. The first 8-track pre-order sold out immediately, and even though it's almost a complete loss to make the things, TMBG like their fans and added another run, which also immediately sold out. I kinda hope they made some for us Instant Fan Club members too (You must me thinking of some other band). They also have a CD/Book edition (what I get for being in the Fan Club), the CD only, download only, and of course, vinyl. You may be surprised to know, I'm not bothering to get the vinyl. Well, I have a couple of theirs on vinyl, and they don't do a thing for the music you can't get out of the CD or even a 320 MP3 (which I also get through the club). I did recently order a couple limited number TMBG 45's though- good collector editions and do have a couple songs not found on other albums. I also picked up a vinyl copy of my favorite IfIhadAHiFi release, their Nada Surf EP... it was cheap. They did fit one piece of novelty detail in it though, The last song on side 1 ends with a cat playfully yowling, and they fixed it so it's on a repeating groove. Yow-ow-ow-ow-ow...*skip* Yow-ow-ow-ow-ow...*skip* Yow-ow-ow-ow-ow...*skip* Yow-ow-ow-ow-ow...*skip* ... I JUST now did something a little silly. Ordered a pre-order of a Target (store) exclusive pressing of the Tron Legacy soundtrack... yeah the one from 10 years ago. It ships in DECEMBER. Why? Got a tip about it.... should be a good album, half Daft Punk, highly acclaimed. But mostly, I've been a bit influenced by the collectors market and the chance to flip it as a reseller. This could be worth a lot of money actually.
