Earlier this month, comic book artist/illustrator Richard Corben died at age 80. He was a technical innovator, using clay models, felt markers, airbrush and unique approaches to coloring in his strips and covers. Very influential to underground comix in the 70s he later gained mass exposure through Heavy Metal magazine and Warren publications like Creepy and Eerie. You know when I was a kid I bought Marvel magazine/comics. Just because the graphics blew me away. I don't think I read them and don't watch the super hero films or anything. I just couldn't resist the artwork. And that was enough for me. A bit like buying an album because of the cover. I did that with Tubeway Army. The music was good too. The power of visual attraction. Massive.

For those who didn't follow comic books, Corben also did the cover for Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell." I made an attempt to be an underground cartoonist in the early 70s. I admired Corben for his technical brilliance, but had a problem with his stereotypical super exaggerated anatomy. Most fans were fine with it.

This is pretty dark in light of current events, but I like it. Rest in Peace Sir. For Chad Stuart.

Tony Rice, Bluegrass guitarist extraordinaire has died at age 69. I actually met him in the 70s, by circumstance. I was at an artist friend's studio, with her and another friend, when he stopped by to check out her design proposals for his next album cover. She told us later she purposely invited us because she was afraid he would hit on her ( and was in a serious relationship.) I had no idea who he was at the time, clueless as usual.

Hank Aaron has passed. I'm sure he's been welcomed at the Big Diamond In The Sky with a great roar and much celebration. He broke Babe Ruth's Homerun Record, in the midst of death threats and racism. I saw part of a piece on a sports channel this morning, and watched as "Hammerin Hank" rounded the bases and spectators jumped over the railings in the stands to run along with him. (1974-things were different.) His mom even made it onto the field and waded through the throng of his teammates around home plate, and gave him a hug only a mama can give. He was a Baseball Hall of Famer, a record breaker and he played 23 years in the Big Leagues. Rest Peacefully, Mr. Aaron, with the other Legends of Baseball. <3

Unfortunate news from the larger XTC fandom community that Sara Emily (don't know if she had a forum name), an organizer for the 2017 get-together and all around awesome person has died, at some point in the past month or so. Details have not been relayed. We never met in person but I admired her from afar and contacted occasionally in social media.
For some reason, I associated her with Neko Case. Fiery but friendly, open but distant, joyful but melancholic. And a bit of physical resemblance (red head).
A Friday night girl bracing for Sunday to come
I love your long shadows and your gun powder eyes

Rather slitty-eyed near the end, though, wasn't he? (Speaking as the parent of half-East-Asian children, BTW)
