miles, San Francisco in the mid 60s really would have been a polar opposite to the Mid and Southern American relatives you visited. Sounds like they were still living in the 50s and before. I think the contrast was a good experience for you since, well, diversity awareness at a young age. That's good to have in your pocket!

I am grateful for all my experiences, some more in retrospect I just listened to a live recording of the first show I ever went to at Fillmore West (the recording was probably not from the the same night we went). I was 16 and went with my best friend. It was Traffic, my favorite group. The format was like the old nightclub one, with 2 sets by all the groups, usually there were 3 bands playing. So the first band plays, they were Lamb, a very mellow acoustic folky band, they sat on pillows while they played. Followed by John Hammond, who played solo blues on guitar and sang. Then it was Traffic, just a trio, playing right there about 15 feet away on the low stage, part of what gave the place a casual feeling, along with the old couches in the back. They were playing their new album, John Barleycorn Must Die, and selections from the earlier albums. They finished their set, there was break and Lamb came back on, then Hammond again. Finally Traffic came back and started to play the same songs from the first set, thinking it was a different audience. Everyone started yelling, We'll all still here! Play something different! And they did. My friend and I missed the encore, because we had to hightail it back to Market St and catch the very last streetcar back trough the tunnel and to our neighborhood.

That must be a wonderful memory. Exciting to get to see Traffic then. I love their first album most, but enjoy the rest. The closest I came to a Traffic like show was seeing the almost Blind Faith reunion where Clapton & Winwood got together to do Blind Faith songs, some Traffic, and then a mix of things for the rest. I dont care for Claptons outspoken comments lately, but that show was wonderful music.

I love Stevie Winwood. miles was Jim Capaldi drumming? What a cool thing to have access to and view all these years later! I saw the Winwood and Clapton tour at the Hollywood Bowl several years ago, bluedemon25! Good concert!

Yes, it was Jim on drums and Chris on sax, flute and keyboards. By the time the tour reached the East coast, they had added Rick Gretch on bass, who was in Blind Faith. I have heard some recordings from that year at Fillmore East, they were recording a proposed album, but it was never released. Rick stuck around for Low Spark.

I never liked his music after Cream all that much, aside from his right wing blather. I also never liked Bruce Springsteen, so I am not average.
On the Traffic Fillmore West cds, is their version of Can't Find My Way Home, different sounding from the original, and soon dropped from their shows.

I join you in being amongst those who doesn't feel enthusiastic for Bruce. Not bad but just doesn't do much for me.

I didn't know Clapton helped Stevie with his career, miles. Stevie was a teenaged sensation in The Spencer Davis Group, which was bluesy and lots of fun. Like you both, and at the risk of reminding Mr Tein that I do not tolerate Springsteen because he can not sing, I call his music Bruce Abuse. I know he has about a zillion fans, and I will never compete with them for concert tickets. That's ok, there are plenty of other musicians and singers we like in common and I have learned a lot about new bands from Mr. Tein and I thank him.

I was referring to the joint tours like the one Blue saw. Tom Petty also took Winwood on tours as an opening act. I think Stevie did not really have a lot of success with the solo stuff after the Roll With It era. No doubt many who saw him opening were not familiar with his work.
I read J J Cale made more money with his Clapton collaboration than he did from his entire solo career (of course record contracts screwed so many musicians out of royalties.)

Ah, I see, miles. Thanks for the info. I remember reading that Stevie Winwood did not travel by air and when he toured back in the day, it was by bus. I don't know how he got to the U.S. I wonder if that ever changed for him.

Major accomplishment last night was driving around to the 3 crappy local supermarkets to find one with not boring ice cream flavors. Managed to find good Haggen Daz. Coffee whiskey hazelnut is good and I don't even like coffee. 2nd achievement, finished the pint over 2 days. Hopefully the hiking the past few days offset it.
Also good actual pistachio from Talenti.
