I feel sorry for the military. They are the puppets of the fuckwit politicians.

I have not heard of it. Please tell me, what's it about? Science and human nature at play. I can't tell you more, I will go overboard and wreck the storytelling. The man is a master storyteller. It's no Pillars Of The Earth, but in its own way, as good as Eye Of The Needle. (No Nazis, though. He sure likes to use Nazis and terrorists as antagonists. They are to Follett as Orcs and Sauron are to Tolkien. And Romulans and The Borg are to The Federation in Star Trek.

So, I believe at least one forum member remarked they enjoyed past forum discussion of current events. As such. Anyone have anything to say with respect to the decision to not extend past the Aug 31st deadline for Afghanistan evacuations? Smart? Stupid? Acceptable or not? I used to love discussing current events with my grandmother, but I sadly no longer have her to do so with. I am mindful a private phone conversation is different from a potentially public forum and may impact the feeling of freedom to speak ad openly ad one might. Then again maybe not.

I am glad Biden requested an extension from those currently controlling the areas where potential evacuees are tenuously perched. I am not surprised the response was negative. Today's news broadcast (CNN, I think) informed me that 21,000 people were evacuated yesterday. Too bad Kabul is in the middle of non-friendly countries or ones that are unable/unwilling/haven't been asked yet for the US to park some of the evacuees in as they conduct a rapid shuttle mission. Captain Picard, we need to teleport a shitload of people out of Kabul immediately, if not sooner. Please prepare to host people that need the safe haven of The Federation! Too bad we don't have that technology, as well as a Federation of Planets, not just countries. Dang it, Trump, no one will take us, now!

I don't think even Trump would have made a bigger mess than what is occurring.

I can't say I'm surprised by today's news, but is still nonetheless upsetting. I wonder how many US and European citizens currently awaiting evacuation will successfully be out by the end of the month and what success those left will have. Lot of hot air in politics obviously so I'll take those reported promises to get all out as true when I see it happen and not sooner.

I don't think even Trump would have made a bigger mess than what is occurring. Wrong.
Yes let us disegard all that has gone before for 20 years, and emotional overreact to the ongoing horror that is war. There are no clean exits. Biden is doing the right thing and only those with courage would do so. Too easy to kick the can down the road, (20 years) and let someone else catch the flack that so many are eagerly and hysterically applying. So many on the so called left are now advocating a forever war, through the fucking looking glass.

Just talking about the exit strategy which has been shambolic and tragic.

"America Took the Bait After an Attack 20 Years Ago. Not This Time.
We cannot and must not let the attackers achieve their utmost goal and capture the narrative of our exit nor can we allow them to remake our plans.
That is, after all, the objective of terrorists. It is their force multiplier. They, who are by and large weak, amplify the impact of their deeds by attacking highly visible soft targets in ways that generate media coverage and public reaction. And then they hope that those they attack respond in a way that further elevates themโby characterizing their threat as bigger than it is or by becoming bogged down in asymmetric conflicts that weaken them in terms of their public image and their resources."

Just talking about the exit strategy which has been shambolic and tragic. The strategy was to get out with the support of the Afghan army. The army collapsed. War is chaos, hell and fog.

More from Rothkop:
The intellectual dishonesty that we have seen in critiques of Biden's handling of the exit from Afghanistan has been spectacular. That's not to say some critiques are not warranted. They certainly are. But, some of the arguments being used are so indefensible they require us to question the critics' motives or expertise. Here are some of the worst ones. 1. Biden owns this. (No. The authors of 20 yrs of war own this. The corrupt Afghan govt & the Afghan military who stood down own this. The Trump Admin that set the deadlines, drew down the troops, left behind the materiel & released 5000 Taliban own this.) 2. Well, at least he owns the chaos surrounding our exit. (No. There's no way that the Taliban regaining control would not have led to chaos w/many thousands of Afghans seeking to escape the rule of a thug regime. Whenever we started airlifting folks out, it would've started.) 3. Well, at least he should have been better prepared for the chaos. (Ok. I'm gonna give you this one. But having said that, efforts to prepare were rebuffed. The Afghan gov't did not want the US beginning mass evacuations for the reasons cited above.)
