Thought I'd start a thread on the various drummers that have graced XTC with the back beat to many of the band's work.
So - I pose a question...
Who was your preference as drummer - and why? Multiple choices will be welcomed

Here's a list of the XTC drummers:
Terry Chambers Pete Phipps - Mummer and Big Express Prairie Prince - Skylarking/AV1 and some Waspstar Ian Gregory - Dukes of Stratosphear Pat Mastelotto - Oranges and Lemons Dave Mattacks - Nonsuch Chuck Sabo - Waspstar Brian Doherty "Cherry in Your Tree" (They Might Be Giants drummer) Chris Sharrock "The Good Things" (Icicle Works, The La's, Beady Eye)
All pretty awesome - I'd have to go with good old Terry slightly over the rest though, as the live band drummer!

Donavan, I repeated Terry Chambers several times, like you suggested. Incredibly, he appeared before me. If only I hadn't been in the shower at the time.

Donavan, would it be inappropriate to suggest that your one-liner should be followed by a rim shot?

Terry, of course, though all the rest do really great stuff. They let the drummers open up more in the second half of their career, damn shame we never got to hear Terry in that kind of looser environment. As utterly sublime and masterful as Phipps is on "Human Alchemy", I would have really liked to hear what Terry would have done with it. Or, "Funk Pop A Roll". If Terry had stuck around and played on all the songs on The Big Express, it would have been brilliant. "Train Running Low On Soul Coal", imagine that with Terry.
I'll go: Terry Pete Ian (who was the closest to Terry's feel, I think) Pat (they let him go to town) Prarie Dave Chuck

From a drummer's point of view, I'd list as: Terry: He had a wonderful swagger with his playing, especially on the earlier stuff. He was so powerful as well - almost like Tony Thompson of Chic, or John Bonham I would say. The stone room at the Townhouse just suited his style. Dave: A technical master of phrasing and knowing what not to play! I know The Disappointed was a loop, but the patterns of Omnibus just blow me down! Pete: The perfect meld of acoustic and electronic. And, his playing I Remember The Sun - lush jazz swingy feel! Ian: Much like Terry, but also had that 60's feel. Prarie: Funky and swingy - he knew his chops, and it shone through in Skylarking. Extrovert is my fave of this period. Pat: Another marriage of electronics and acoustics, which he has put to good use in King Crimson since. The opener Garden Of Earthy Delights just highlights how good he is. Chuck: Great session player, in the same vain as Dave IMO. You can really hear his understanding of dynamics and feel. Chris: I've loved his drumming since Icicle Works - only one track but this doesn't highlight is greatness. Just listen to the live work he did with Robbie Williams! Oh - and rim shots... look up the Bruford Snare sound
