I spend time with dying people on a weekly basis, and after talking to families who suffer to wait for someone to pass, I am definitely voting YES!

In Oregon there has been a death with dignity law in effect for several years. It was passed twice by popular vote. It does require that the illness be terminal, requires the individual be evaluated by 2 doctors and be mentally coherent. Many who qualify for the drugs do not actually chose to use them. Some who face an extended and painful demise, or loss of what makes them a conscious human being, chose to take control of the dying process, and do so with family and friends with them. I support this idea and basic right, and the legal framework here dispels the potential abuses that have been raised by opponents. Of course the Catholic Church will never accept this individual human right. Quality of life and death is a human right that should not be dictated by religious institutions and overzealous governments.

"Many who qualify for the drugs do not actually chose to use them."
But the choice is there. This makes living more tolerable because you know you have the option should things become too much.

Yes that is key. Illnesses don't always follow the expected outcome, you may have more or less time than the doctors can predict. Likewise the level of pain and functioning. With so much out of your control, having the option is powerful.

Very powerful and very liberating in a stressful situation. Puts you back in charge when you feel all is awry.

Apparently doctor-assisted death was applied to the Thread Killer Thread. Thread Killer Thread-one. Doctor-assisted death--zero.

Or rather die for the economy without dignity if you are strapped for cash.

It is a sea change. From no one may end their own life, even those suffering with incurable illness, because god says every life is precious. To hey you didn't have long anyway, get out there and sacrifice yourself. Jump into the volcano of the economy, you don't even have to be a virgin.

I'm a virgin. At least it feels like that, it's been so long.

I'd settle for a minor earth tremor.

I'd settle for a minor earth tremor. A movement of inches?
