something like 17 hours ago i got on a plane and eventually ended up in portland, oregon. then i spent three hours in a meeting; tomorrow i get to actually talk about the work i came here to talk about. but i'm pretty toasted. under better circumstances i might get a look at the town, having never been here before, but for now i think i can only manage to get to bed.

Train drivers are the best. Yes, but they tend to hog the lane, and are reluctant overtakers.

Enjoy what you can of the city, even if its just a cup of coffee at a nearby coffee shop. Or else, watch an episode or two of Portlandia.

Wow. I've seen storm drains explode and it is frightening. Especially on a busy street.

I know a guy who is a bit of a hypochondriac (he is the target audience for the 24-hour news cycle constantly looking for the next big disease to use as a ratings boost), so I posed him the following question.
When a hypochondriac makes a list of all the diseases that he thinks he has, does he include hypochondria?
Somehow this question was met with a lack of enthusiasm.

When did life get to be so expensive and so unnecessarily complicated? For ten years I've had a bare bones, basic pay as you go cell phone that I use a few times a week for local calls and once a week for calling my folks. I was able to put any amount of money on it when the balance got low, via direct debit. Easy peasy, worked like a charm. Last month when my account was blocked I learned that the rules had changed and I am now required to purchase a minimum dollar amount each month in order to keep the phone active. Grumble, grumble, ok fine, it's a small dollar amount. Tonight, three weeks after the rule change, my account is once again frozen! Prior to going to the phone store tomorrow and do my best to be kindly exasperated, I looked at the provider's web site and learned that my antiquated plan isn't even an option anymore. I don't want or need text, data, cameras, apps and all other crap that turns people into unaware sheep. A local calls only landline telephone in my town is more expensive than my current pay as you go cell phone. I think I might be getting too old for this new reality. I'm for sure getting too cranky.

Well, I got it all sorted. More rule changes that I was unaware of but at least I'm able to keep the phone and plan I have...for the time being. I think my next communication device will involve tin cans and string.
just to be clear, this is meant in the nicest, funniest way.

Spreading fertiliser pellets in a vineyard today. That's how you explained it away, was it?

The bad part about today is being called in to work at the last minute. The good part is having my shift on Saturday nixed in exchange. I will definitely take the trade.
