See? I shouldn't have opened that one. Ned, how can you administer a forum if you you exclude someone's posts? Hence exclude a member. Isn't it your job as administrator to encourage inclusiveness? Not looking for a fight, just saying. I was shocked and a bit hurt to read that you was doing this. And a bit baffled. Up to you of course and you probably won't even read this. Or will you? And as you requested I very rarely reply to your posts and tread very carefully around you to avoid misinterpretations. Again not looking for a fight but I obviously make you feel uncomfortable and you doing what you do with my posts makes me feel the same. Maybe we should just call it a score draw. It's just all a bit sad in such a small community. But as always, I wish you well. I certainly don't look at all the threads. A tiny amount of them, I pay more attention to this area, obviously, as it is the "help" and feedback section. But I told you months ago, when we had our last argument, that I would be using this forum's "ignore" function for your posts and suggested you could do the same with me if you'd like, and you declined. But I have found it quite freeing. It allows me to just let the conversations flow. I see the responses people make to you and I can judge if I need to address an issue you might be involved in. You may remember me volunteering help on getting videos to show many months ago. I knew to look into it because others were talking about it. But I did recently happen to open up and look at a post elsewhere you made, (it's not like I never do) and in the case of this one I opened, it did annoy me. I kept my mouth shut though and no one else mentioned it, so that was that. It's not personal though, you hit a internet interaction pet peeve (like declaring "anyone's standards"). An ignore function is available because users on forums wanted it and it is widely used.

Well getting annoyed and disagreeing is part of a pubic forum. In fact it keeps it going. In moderation. And I thought you was the moderator. I think it silly to hide from opinion because it doesn't fit with that of yours. You may want to go through life like that. I certainly don't. And don't you think that you maybe piss people off too? Do you want them to pull the shutters and hide under the covers? Seems a strange way to go through life. But that's OK if you choose to. But it's a bit odd to me that someone with this mindset chooses to be an Internet forum administrator. It's certainly not on the job description. But hey, only you applied so you can make up your own rules, I guess.

You really should join more forums. I'm a member of an anime forum that has a section for members that pay a little extra for little perks, which I do. Even though it is just a small amount- it means the people who pay it tend to be a selective bunch and "fans" of the forum and how it's run. In this "subscriber section," there is a thread called "Post here instead of elsewhere to avoid Drama" - it's mostly the moderators venting about things they can't say in the threads where they'd reeeeealy like to tell someone off.
This forum doesn't need that kind of moderation. But your ideals about public forums are... NOT the norm. Just about the only thing that ever needs to be addressed in this forum's current state is my interaction with you... Which I feel I have mostly successfully handled, by not interacting. That's just how it works. An admin does not to be a discussion starter, a moderator does not need to force themself to participate in subjects they don't want to. An admin provides a place for conversation and makes sure it fits the needs and wants of most users.A moderator addresses issues, usually enforcing rules and dealing with member arguments. When I post in the forum outside of my role in either of those roles, I do so as a regular user and member and have no special need to do anything else.

I guess we all have our own take on what 'successfully handled' looks like. We will have to agree to disagree on that one. But I've said all I need to say on this subject. So will leave it there. Good to chat.... Perhaps we need a Mayor around here to adjudicate.

The previous Back Porch had stretches where there'd be like 5 posts in a week I obviously wasn't on the previous Back Porch. That was my favourite of the 4 fora. Lots of active members, very interesting threads, lots of fun and games (I remember Ned/Spastic Minnow organising an intramural Clue match), almost none of the cliques and b*tching that had been ruining IDEA for several years. Annual online, real-time Xmas parties. Respectful, in-depth debates on religion, culture, politics, the arts, sports, etc. Spidermage was our dad. Then Partridge had to go and ruin everything with his Ape shit.

I can't be too specific about the details, but I will say that I am paid in NedCoins.

I imagine at least some of us would be happy to participate.

APE was my favourite. I had some great chats with Andy after a rocky start on IDEA. Facebook fucked everything up. Everyone got off because of a few undesirables who kept the place going. Steve was great at Admin. And Twitter ended Andy online. Be careful what you wish for folks.

It feels a lot like that second forum, except for the discrepancy in participant numbers. It's just hard to keep discussions fresh, and the surprise factor popping, when there are only a handful of regulars. My main contributions to the Games Room is By Hook or By Crook, Picture Association, Song Association, Board Games and Art That Makes You Cry. But Intro, Don and Miles grew bored with most of those, and they fell by the wayside, buried under the rubble on Page 3. Lucky for us that you and Mare have been around lately! Mwah! XOXO

Steve was great at Admin. And Twitter ended Andy online. Be careful what you wish for folks. As I recall, there were only a few dozen members on Ape -- much fewer than on the first Back Porch, and IDEA had hundreds. Facebook had already snatched the bodies of most XTC fans by then. Those undersirables on Ape were seriously sick people who got off on chasing decent folk like me away. I was called a racist (?) for having half-Asian children. Anyone who defended themselves against their myriad, vile, baseless accusations were met with even nastier insults. They really took pleasure in degrading others; that BS about them being forum newbies fighting back against the old IDEA/Back Porch guard was just an excuse to indulge in sadistic, puerile behaviour. And it worked. Almost everyone left, including me. When I found out that that the Ape forum was closing, I took a bow the last week. Read some recent threads. Ugh. Had no regrets. I registered here a year or two later, but I was going through hell at the time and forgot about it. Now here I am, Sunset and Camden! Make 'em laugh, I say!

Sounds like troll garbage you encountered. I am very choosy about where I participate forum-wise to try and avoid that too. By far most of my participation is here. I was reading on one of the only others I'm on about reported teenager led bullying/troll behavior against a person that is both a forum member and does as a side job professional work in music. Really gross pathetic behavior even if sadly not surprising. I know this occurs from people of all ages, but I can't shake the feeling an overabundance of it comes from generations that grew up with the internet widely established all their life. Makes me hesitant to participate in forums dominated by people younger than me.
I like our word games and song association and such. I'm aware I've attempted to start some threads that haven't had shared interest. That's ok I feel. Worth a shot.

Andy's Twitter presence was a mixed bag for me. I really loved when he gave insight to his music or when he do sort of his version of our Daily Psych thread. But some of his views were well I'm not sure what to properly call it. Suffice to say I respectfully thought otherwise. Not that hes the only musician that has happened with. I still look forward to his music. I could have dealt with a difference in opinion; I'm not such a snowflake to melt because I'm confronted with differences. So I do feel overall it's a shame he felt the need to remove himself from online. I also really like those interview transcripts about XTC songs on Chalkhills.
Now we have (as far as I know) no direct inside info on what he's up to. I do happen to very much enjoy the expanded demos and all discs put out and recall when he hinted at listening to AV tapes before the announcement it was to come out. So hearing about that or what they can or can't find etc was neat to me. I really enjoyed Cave Girl and would love him to release the rest of The 12 Flavors of Hercules.

I also liked Planet England a lot so if he really finishes that additional work with RH and it manifests I'd love to get it.

Yeah Andy did himself no favours on Twitter and came out with some seriously disturbing stuff. I found it difficult to listen to some of his beautiful compassionate lyrics then read some of his Twitter madness. It didn't seem like the same person. I guess we are all walking talking contradictions. So it's all good. As for APE there was also some horrible shit from some respected regulars. But they mostly did it by PM as to keep their online public image protected. I was threatened with physical violence and endured vile insults. Because I wouldn't go public with it, it steadily got worse. But that said I thought APE was ok. I could deal with the argy-bargy although what Terra describes is unacceptable.

Steve was great at Admin. Hard to support that statement. Apart from the horrible organization of the forum, he had no interest in simple upkeep. And really, all he needed to do was make a request for volunteer moderators. At one point in the Idea days he asked me to be a volunteer moderator (He was the one to bring it up). I thought about it for a day and responded that I would... then he never responded. It was so bizarre. Not that I would have been a mod at APE and he wouldn't ask me, but others would have probably stepped up if he would have just asked. The worst was probably that point when he wouldn't approve new members!. It started with auto-registration but he couldn't figure out a way to filter out spambots, so he just turned off automatic registration and new member requests just sat there for months... Maybe a full year?
