I listened to Cool for Cats by Squeeze today. Haven't listened to that song for years. But when I heard it today I was back in my bedroom in my parents house. It was chilly and I could smell the deodorant and aftershave to block out my cigarrettes. And the insecurity came back dressed up in punk-smart clothes, whilst smuggling empty beer cans out. Fully aware it was Sunday and the real world kicked in soon. So go out and try to wipe it out. Pubs kicked you out about 11pm then so not enough time to forget the world. But that song put me back there. Other songs send me to other places. How about you?

Hey one word answers are my ting. Or were. I remember that it royally pissed Mr Tein off. To my great amusement. Mr Tien told one of the best jokes I have ever heard on a previous Xtc forum. Good old Mr Teen, I wonder what he's doing now? Answers on a postcard.

Yesterday: "Alexa, play John Mellencamp" I can feel myself dropping a cassette into my old Boombox... needing to squint at the middle to see which side it's cued to.
A mix of feelings really, the "Cougar" days is still fun and I can still sing along to everything. But John did contribute to my musical maturation with "The Lonesome Jubilee" and "Big Daddy" by doing more message songs and more complex metaphors and deeper lyrics while moving (mostly) away from the "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." nonsense (not that I didn't groove to that when it played) and embracing Roots instrumentation so much.

I think most songs are Music Time Machines for me. This one I can see since I was at The Roxy, at a live performance. I mostly remember how great it sounded and how happy I was.
