Greetings all!
I've been posting on various rock and prog boards for years, but I had a musical epiphany a couple of months ago, which led me here...
As a teenager I saw and read the LP cover for Go 2 in a US record store. I thought it was brilliant, but my pocket money was nil, so I didn't buy the album. Then at uni I heard Skylarking at a dorm party. A friend then played me Oranges & Lemons on request - whereupon I started steadily adding XTC titles to my CD collection - whereupon I discovered Mummer. I was sold. XTC was clearly a Great Band, a title I don't bestow very often.
I'm an album-orientated person. To me the measure of a great band is how many great albums they created. One of my hobbies is to gather every non-LP track by bands I like and create compilation discs to add to the band's official discography. I've been known to spend hundreds of $$ on these projects. (Did I mention that I like music?) To date I've created comps for Allan Holdsworth, JS Bach, the Beatles, Bjรถrk, the Dixie Dregs, Gentle Giant, Jimi Hendrix, Henry Cow, Jethro Tull, Juan Cabanilles, Charles Mingus, Steve Morse, Pink Floyd, the Move, the Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa, with Miles Davis in progress.
A couple of months ago I got around to XTC. Within about a week's research I had realised that there were hours and hours of original XTC songs I'd never heard in my life, dozens if not hundreds of songs. I further realised, to my astonishment, that XTC's catalogue was substantially larger than the Beatles'. That did the trick; that brought me here.
From time to time I'll ask about various releases - and I hope it's OK if I ask about the underground stuff too. I've got lots of experience in reconstructing official discographies - but for the unofficial stuff, I often have to rely on fans who know what they're talking about. (And, in some cases, fans who have the bleedin' stuff!) I presume I'll find that here.
Cheers! - Phil (progrockfan)

Welcome Phil. Several of us are big prog rock fans (I am.) Interesting list of bands you cite.
If you haven't checked out Fuzzy Warbles, there is a lot to chew on there.

Greetings miles ! It's always nice to meet a fellow prog rock fan. The list of bands for which I've made comps doesn't necessarily represent all the music I like, or even all the prog; rather, it's those musicians I like who happen to have a bunch of cool tunes that aren't represented within their album catalogues. I own all 9 volumes of Fuzzy Warbles and a good deal more besides. The Steven Wilson remasters are another great source for previously hard-to-find material (and they sound fantastic too). There's lots of titles for SW to look at next, but I'm really hoping he'll eventually tackle Mummer, which for my ears is one of the most underrated albums in rock history.
My compilation will consist solely of songs not released on LPs: in other words, no demo for Love on a Farmboy's Wages, but definitely space for its non-Mummer B-sides Desert Island and Toys. I can see already that the comp will run over seven hours in length.
The two main things I'm searching for right now are:
* A lossless copy of Andy's Hello Selection CD; and
* A lossless copy of the unauthorised Acoustic Tales CD.
I'll be looking for other things in future too, I'm sure, as I continue my research into the astonishingly complex XTC discography - easily the most sprawling, hard-to-sort discography I've ever tackled.
If the good folks on this site wish me to do so, I'll be happy to share the tracklist for my discography when it's finished; no publicly-posted list exists like the one I'm putting together, covering every non-LP XTC and related release. (But don't hold your breath - I still have a distance to travel.)

Hullo Phil ! Oh, my! What an ambition you have set to accomplish! And very cool, too. Long ago, I collected Police singles for the very reason that their B Sides weren't on any albums. That didn't last very long, but I was pretty greedy for those singles. Plus, the Police's B sides were released on an album, taking all the fun out of it. The XTC fanbase is extremely knowledgable and dedicated, and I hope they will avail themselves to you for your project. I am a not in that category, but I do love them dearly so I guess I do hit the dedicated bit. As for Progressive Rock, I love that, too. I missed the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, but Seconds Out was the first album I owned and I wore it out. I think I have every solo LP Peter Gabriel released up to and including So. Nektar, Hawkwind, Steve Hackett solo stuff, Kevin Ayers (RIP), ELP, Stackridge, King Crimson (especially the Fripp & Eno creations), Kayak, there's a lot I don't even remember I love. Pink Floyd, of course. Ex-husband was batpoop crazy about Zappa...I just like the bluesy music and the instrumentals. Welcome to the Back Porch! Pleased to meet you!

I don't know what Prog Rock is. Maybe we need to destroy it. Or is it just PoP under a different name?
On a walkway and moving fast All I get is transistor blast Someone leans in my direction Quizzing on my station selection What do you call that noise That you put on?

I don't know what Prog Rock is. I'm pretty sure prog rock was a spinoff of this.

At that point we all feel secure being in the our own particular comfort zone. Natural order will have been resumed and we all move forward together, but apart. A warm welcome to the pleasure-dome to our two new members. Life's a gas, I hope it's gonna last x ๐
