The jitties will be quiet now. Living mostly on memories until they are refreshed again some time hence. They call ginnels "Tenfoots" in Hull. Because the alleyways between all the houses are approximately ten feet wide. It's ginnels and alleys where I live.

I lived in Hull for most of the 1990s, and still remember the culture shock on first hearing terms like tenfoot and the odd local usages - “I work eight while four” for example.

This is a fine image, Mr. DL.! The worn down centers of the top two steps hint of the many stories this Jitty could tell. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks very much for sharing the link, Mr. Gladwin...that was lovely! I read it aloud to myself. Your photograph captured your piece very well and I thougoughly enjoyed your metaphors, alliteration and felt like I was inhaling the life from Jitties past and present, myself.
I took a photograph many years ago, for a college class. I shot through a knothole in the gate my Dad built, looking down the crooked and imperfect foot wide sidewalk he had poured himself. It went alongside our home, to the backyard and was between the neighbor's fence and our home. Your Jitty feels like the space in my being where that little side yard is, my own photograph echoing the snuck cigarettes and being so glad I didn't have to use the hand trimmers to cut around the stepping stones anymore.
Yup. Really enjoyed your writing. Ta, thanks!

Thank you for your kind words, and thanks for reading! It's always good to know when someone has enjoyed what I have written. Makes the effort worthwhile.

I'm being interviewed on BBC Radio Derby tomorrow morning, about ginnels in general and my short story Jitty in particular.
The feature should begin at around 08:40 and will begin with Helen Nugent, editor of Northern Soul magazine, to whose GinnelWatch feature I have also contributed - see above.

I shall catch up later, across the great divide of the M1, here in Nottingham......

Lovely to hear your voice and share in your enthusiasm for jitties, Mr. Gladwin!
So jitties are short cuts for locals...I speak of using neighborhood streets to avoid heavily trafficked ones as taking the Secret Back Way.
Jitties are pretty cool.
Is there any relationship between the word jitty and the word jitters? (Do some jitties give you the creeps?)
(If BBC Derby doesn't do the calendar, do your own and call it Jitties, Ten Foots and Ginnels...maybe research a story about each one from locals and make note of it.
I'm just thinking like an amateur photographer and verbiage enthusiast. )
Thank you for the link!

Blimey, they didn't give you much airtime Dave, but charming nevertheless.

I was thinking that, too, donavan. Sweet, but way too short.
