For me, D&W by a country mile, because it was the first one I bought and knew well. For me, ES has too many songs much longer than they need to be. The thing is, other than that, my ratings change constantly. I will not like an album, or a song, then a year later it's my favourite. If I'm brutally honest, there are many songs I will never like, when the old "too clever by half" cliche rears its ugly head, but the beauty of XTC is that you can re-visit and re-visit, and your reaction changes and re-changes over the years.
Time for a lie-down.

Not there from the White Music start? But yes you're right, songs I didn't like suddenly grab me and I pop one of my "favourites" on only to turn it off part way through. I love the too clever by half stuff. "They" played it a bit too straight for me near the end.

No, not there from the start: heard GO2 first as a friend's brother had it, but D&W was the first purchase. Andy P seems wilfully perverse in all things (and that's an admirable trait, if you're not a family member) but he scuppers songs too often by trying too hard to be different. Says the bloke who's never written a decent song in his life (and I have tried).

Can you be too clever?

I think you can, or rather you can overthink and over-elaborate when simpler might just be better.

'Appen. Certainly too much layering on the mixing in some songs.

I rank it second behind Apple Venus Vol. 1--really close, but AV has Harvest Festival, which tips things in favor of that album.

That's just because Andy namechecked you in Towers of LonDon. True. I did speak with him too, although briefly, in Liverpool on the Black Sea tour.
