Having been TV-less for about ten years now, I find myself at a loss in regard to the current trends in television. With the cornucopia of programming available online - both legal and not - it is interesting to see how the industry is reacting to the rapid changes in technology.
I'm appreciative of the broadcast and cable programs that stream online, although I find myself watching fewer of these each season.
Is anybody else here without a telly? And, if so, do you rely on online programming instead or just forgo it altogether?

Since living with my parents I have access to cable, but I rarely chose to watch it. I mostly watch anime though, and a handful of shows I can catch on hulu for free. Very little use for cable. I don't even get into the prestigious Cable shows much. Not following any HBO or Showtime shows. I've rented Breaking Bad and the only other AMC show I've watched lately was that first episode of the show about 80's computing that had "Complicated Game" prominently featured in a sequence.
It's sports that can be the issue with some people. Being a baseball fan, having my parent's cable subscription to Detroit Tigers baseball was wonderful, There is an online streaming option though, a little buggy and subject to illogical black-out restrictions, but available. The last couple years I subscribed to cable just for the playoffs- which cannot be found online legally.

My sister and her kids have no cable, and subscribe to Netflix. They only watch the movies and shows they want to.
Fortunately for them. they have no interest whatsoever in news and/or sports.
I get all my news from the computer anyway. By the time I hear a story on TV, it's already at least a half day old.

To be honested it all confuses me ... I long for the old days. Just four channels.

To be honested it all confuses me ... I long for the old days. Just four channels. We had 2 channels when I was a kid and we would actually FIGHT over what to watch. This all reminds me of the Bruce Springsteen song "57 Channels and Nothing On." Now, I have 557 channels and I still can't find a thing to watch. What's wrong with this scenario?

I've nearly cut free. I've had basic Comcast cable for decades, which means no HD. Up until last year, I was able to get QAM HD channels that were fed through the cable, so I was able to get local HD channels, but everything else SD. Last year, Comcast took these away, all the while charging more and more for the crap quality. I've now got an antenna in my attic, which I have been using for several months now. I pickup all the over-the-air free HD channels (which are actually more than what Comcast provided).
Now that I am satisfied that the signal is good through all weather, I just need to make the dreaded call to Comcast to drop the TV part and leave the Internet connection. They are going to keep transferring me to others to try to upsell me as much as possible. UGH.

Im reading the Chimp paradox. Its a bit like reading a power point presentation but has some useful concepts about the human mind and how we interact ( badly or well ) with others...

My mom's doctor cut the cable on March 30, 1978. I have the navel to prove it.

Do you give your Mom a present on your birthday; a token for all the grief you've given her from the get go?

The cable man is coming to my house this afternoon to fix/replace my cable box. Then I will once again have hundreds of TV channels that I will never watch. Zut alors!

I have a little wire that goes into the ground so I can watch Dr Who live with my kids so as to connect into a wider social zeitgeist as I can only bear to watch BBC 1 or 4 as I find advertising intolerable . Plus I can be ready for any Jimmy McGovern product which may intermittently appear. Everything else is Amazon Video or Netflix, which usually means Better Call Saul / Vikings / Game of Thrones / Detectorists, or the one or two decent niche films that can occasionally be discovered (Hunt for the Wilderpeople / X + Y / Whip It).

Amazon Video (in my neck of the woods) has Sneaky Pete which I recommend. Loved Hunt for the Wilderpeople (especially the cheesy Ricky Baker birthday song)
