...and another artist and guitar hero is gone. Blues guitarist Lonnie Mack passed away last Thursday at age 76. As are the vagaries of fame, Lonnie's passing was overshadowed by the news of Prince's death. Mr. Mack was a pioneer in the early days of rock n roll, pushing the rockabilly sound to new heights with his innovative technique and style. As he said himself, “I was a bridge-over between the standard country licks in early rock ‘n’ roll and the screamin’ kinda stuff that came later.” He influenced and played with many of the guitarists who we idolize today; Page, Beck and Allman to name a few. You'll hear Mr. Mack's guitar (both lead and bass) on The Doors, Roadhouse Blues. I first became aware of Lonnie Mack through one of my guitar heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Stevie was a champion of Lonnie's in the 80's and produced and played on the Lp, Strike Like Lightening. Here are the two of them playing Lonnie's early 60's hit, Wham (start the video at 1:10)

His flying V guitar was # 7 of all those ever made. His use of the tremolo or whammy bar was very influential as he was one of the first to use it for recordings.

I knew Lonnie was an early user of the flying V but I didn't know he was that early. Thanks for the info.
