Darkly serendipitous anniversary to the Zoot Suit Riots, begun on this date in 1943, the result of white members of state power attacking minorities and facing no repercussions. Oddly enough, I just started rereading James Ellroy's "The Black Dahlia," which begins in the riots. Happy anniversary to D-Day, occurring on this date in 1944. We are unable to confirm that the D stands for Donavan.

What is the traditional way to celebrate Don Day? Special clothing? A particular food? A 24-hour session of listening to The Fall?

Whatever we do, Ned said he will open the gates and let the lurkers in free of charge for the day. And there has been some talk of inviting Andy. The newly elected Mayor will start and end the day with an opening and closing speech. Drinking beer will be compulsory and the wearing of clothes optional.

I wondered what D Day stood for. It stood for Donavan Day--haven't we made that clear? But from what I have read, D simply stood as an abbreviation for "day," so it was Day-Day.

Happy anniversary to Joe McCarthy being called out on his bullshit, being asked by Joseph Welch, "Have you no sense of decency?" The answer was no, like most people who become Republican darlings.

Happy anniversary to E.T, released on this date in 1982 (the movie, not an actual extraterrestrial). I can vaguely recall a four-year-old Introvertigo crying during that movie. What can I say? I'm a big softy (not the Viagra kind, thankfully).

Happy anniversary to Miranda rights, established on this date on 1966 via a decision by the Supreme Court. You have the right to say nothing--wait, I'm in the wrong thread again.

Happy anniversary to cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who became the first woman in space on this date in 1963. Boy, were the Americans red in the face.

Happy anniversary to Jaws, released on this date in 1975 (the movie, not an actual shark). You know which character was unfairly vilified in this movie? The mayor.
