To actually discuss this question, were there any well known "funk bands" in the 90's? or any since the 80's? There are funky songs but has there been a singer or band really dedicated solely to funk since the 80's? Other than old bands, artists that may still put out music. Closest I could think of was Fishbone, but they're mainly thought of as ska/punk... yet I think their core is really funk. Red Hot Chili Peppers were very funky punks early on (One of their early albums was produced by George Clinton) but Rubin largely erased that... helped by Frusciante, who is a good guitarist, but not terribly funky. Jamiroquai? Is that it?

FFF, as I mentioned in another thread. Also Les Rita Mitsouko (80s-90s) and Niagara (90s), the latter of which I saw play live. Mostly funk-rock, but they all branched out in different genres before breaking up, a la XTC. Fred Chichin was one of the best funk guitarists of the past 40 years, imo.
P.S. FFF and Les Rita Mitsouko also recorded some songs in English. In the case of FFF, some of the songs were bilingual i.e. with mixed English and French lyrics.
P.P.S. George Clinton sang co-lead on an FFF song back in the early nineties.

But, you have to search them out. That's kind of my point. As a format for a popular act to focus on it has lost its way. Which is too bad.

Well, I suppose in majority anglo countries, these acts are hard to find/know about. But elsewhere, they've been huge (in some cases, global) stars for decades. Funk's like jazz, in this sense: it's become more popular, and figures more prominently in the contemporary music scene, in the French/German/Swedish/Japanese/etc.-speaking worlds than in its country of origin. Keeping the flame alive! BTW, RIP rock 'n' roll, too.

So all things considered and putting aside, she said he said and I don't like you and you don't like me and they all left because of him or was it Facebook and my mental illness is better than yours. And everyone has fucked off. Is it time to call it a day?

My own mental illness is the election, either trying to ignore it unsuccessfully or submit to compulsive inquiry.
