Good thread name change Ned. Although it now sounds like it's all Pellepennan's fault. This. ---------------- I feel a bit out of place commenting as this thread has progressed since I was never a member of the APE forum. But since I've already started.... The demise of the band is probably the main reason for lack interest in the various incarnations of the forums. XTC were (or is it was?) our raison d'etre. Without them we are left to talk amongst ourselves and, with the emergence of social media, that is perhaps best done elsewhere. If the band reforms and makes new music this forum could see a growth in numbers or activity (don't hold your breath). Since I do not participate in social media I'll continue to stop buy the Backporch and keep in touch with the XTC family in that manner. It's always nice to see a bit of activity from time to time from old and new members. I liken it to family reunions; with the passage of time the members age and the numbers thin as the generations become far flung and involved in other pursuits. In the meantime, hi there - it's good to see you.

Yup. Andy was clearly bored by the APE forum, calling it "dismal" at one point, and he started using Twitter because...well, you'd have to ask him, but I would guess it's the access to lots more people, access to folks other than the die-hard, inbred clan of fans. The argument could go that if he were more active on the forum, the forum would have been more popular, but that still wouldn't have made it worth keeping, I think. the arc of history vis-à-vis social media leans toward open access and cross-connectivity, and that's not the fan forum. My two cents: Sometimes Jack being an arsehole was the only interesting thing going on there. I'm sometimes unsure why I keep coming back here. Nostalgia and a liking for the ones who keep coming back, I suppose. Once don and Bimble and Peggs and Intro and others I'm not naming because I'm lazy are known to me on Facebook and/or Twitter, I'm probably out. I'm touched, AS, but I steer pretty clear of all that stuff!

What does a Facebook page offer that a forum does not? I've nothing against FB, I just don't understand how it works. If each person has their own Facebook page how do group discussions take place - or do people just talk one on one? My impression of FB is that it's kind of hit and run - 'like' something and move on - no depth. Am I completely off the mark?

Don't know much about it, but enough to know it's a totally unsuitable platform for a forum. Many old forums have gone to the wall because of the obsession of moving things to the then latest shiny new thing called Facebook.

Facebook groups take care of topic discussion. Interested fans join and can participate as wanted. They can be fleeting (they basically just scroll of into oblivion) but there's a lot of discussion and many relevsnt topics that, for some reason, never go anywhere here. The highlight of the last weeks is when Ben Gott got the workbook Paul Fox used while mixing Oranges and Lemons and he has been scanning and sharing pages with the group. also, in Chalkhills last week(the most active group) 2 posts about Pugwash's new album "looking forward to the oranges and lemons blu ray. not long now !" for some reason, A David Crosby video Post about new band "termites" whose press name checks XTC A inquiry about the status of the "Revolution in the Shed" book with responses from compiler Todd Bernard Sharing and discussion of the passing of Andy's father Call for a fan meet-up in Evanston, IL for last Thursday's Pugwash concert Promo for "The Nines" new album" Discussion of favorite guitar playing styles ... and about a dozen other posts. Then there are a couple other less active groups. You don't have to join to take a peek. www.facebook.com/groups/103438953910/

But you do have to be a member of Facebook.
So why this place Spaz, if it's so good over there?
You seem pretty shit hot on IT design, are you really saying a forum sits comfortably on Facebook?

Thanks for that information, Ned. My take on it now is that FB is the new forum. Same stuff being talked about or not, just a different platform with the FB template more mobile/tablet/smartphone friendly. As Mr. Tein said earlier in this thread, forum heydays were 10-12 years ago. The same may be said for Facebook in a decade.
BTW, the link you provided is not public. You need to be a member of Facebook to take a peek.
To each their own.
