I wonder if it's a classic big fish/small pond thing (with, of course, due respect to Saints, of whom I am very fond)?

Matt Le Tissier has spoken of his fondness at being the main man and star attraction during his playing days with Southampton.
The former midfield ace spurned many chances to join top clubs during his career with the Saints which spanned about 16 years and he revealed the reasons why he remained at The Dell/St Mary's on a Sky Sports documentary entitled, 'Le God: The Matt Le Tissier Story'.
"People often ask me whether I enjoyed being the big fish in the small pond and I'll be honest with you: too right I did!" said Le Tissier.
"I loved being the centre of attention and the main man. I wanted to entertain people and sticking one in the top corner from 25 yards was a pretty good way of doing that.
"Winning wasn't the be-all and end-all for me."

I wonder if it's a classic big fish/small pond thing (with, of course, due respect to Saints, of whom I am very fond)? I dont think its that simple. I think a few things come togther. a) southampton buy players to fit a certain system of playing and the right players thrive. b) Players like lallana get lots of media attention as a result c) they play well for us, get picked up for england and often get tapped up by big clubs players on international duty d) with their head turned and money on offer they jump ship only to find a) no longer applies. Different system. different culture e) they thne find the media are less kind to a big club player than a small club player f) big clubs are less toelerant of a poor game. adapt or be dropped Classic example of this for me was JAMES BEATTIE. Strachan used his mediocre talent to t he full and told every palyer to look for him with a pass. All our attacks went through him and it made him look good. Picked for england. Off to a new club. Carreer nosedived. Wasnt as good as he thought he was Of course Le Tis was a genius and a lovely bloke

I think if Le Tis played today, the money would have been just too tempting and he would have left. And possibly returned at a later date.

I dont think with all this pressing game lark - he'd get into a modern team. He was viewed by many managers back in those days (Hoddle, branfoot) as a liability due to his lack of exertion and pace!

On the money front - intersting this week we had a fans forum where Saints meet up with the fans and answer questions etc. The chairman, the Football director and Koeman were there. Les Reed the man behind the scenes was being asked about paying the wages of top players. He said when players like Morgan leave saints they dont just double their money - its more like an increase x 4 or 5.
Staggering really
