It was rather apropos that this new forum should happen today. I spent my work day listening to a terrific mix of XTC albums; something I hadn't done in quite some time.
English Settlement, Nonesuch, Skylarking, Oranges and Lemons and Apple Venus all spun happily. Even some of my younger (college age) co-workers were impressed.

Still in love with my Holy Trinity - English Settlement, Black Sea and Drums and Wires, with Nonsvch close by. But all the albums get a listening to sometime during the month. :-)

The lovely Spring weather has me spinning Skylarking and that got me to thinking about an XTC Holy Trinity (per sticksman's post). For me it's- Skylarking, Oranges & Lemons, Nonsuch.
Like a lot of people in the US, Dear God was my introduction to the band.

I was just reading the thread that contains Andy Partridge's Corrector tweets. Low and behold Mr. P mentioned a song that an old Ideas forummer turned me on to and I hadn't heard since those days. Good thing the title of the song rang a bell in my mind.
Does anyone know what album/time frame this song was recorded for? It's such a beautiful piece of music.

Peggs, the track appeared on an XTC tribute called A Testimonial Dinner in 1995. The song was allegedly a cover by the group Terry and the Lovemen. Here is a description from Andy Partridge, taken from the Chalkhills site.
“ Terry and the Lovemen . . . are a group of fellows from Wiltshire and one from Liverpool, who are besotted with XTC. They just seem to take the band's career as a template to live by, (sounds unhealthy to me!) You've got to admit they do a pretty good job on the ‘sounds-alike’ scale. Their singer does a passable Colin and even manages to sound not unlike Dave and Andy in other places (weird). With dedication to duty like this, how could David Yazbek have refused them a place on the album. I hear they took their name from an ad in Japan for our album Black Sea. [The Japanese] jumped the gun and advertised it under the name of one of our ‘in’ jokes at the time, which was calling the record Terry and the Lovemen.”
According to Chalkhills, the song was written in 1989 for the Mayor of Simpleton single--I learned something new today.

Thanks for the answer, Introvertigo. I've known about 'A Testimonial Dinner' for a long time but have never heard it. Colin has such a gift for painting the everyday in his songs. Sunshinedrenchy, first of all, howdy! I like that you list Nonsuch twice in your holy trinity. It is indeed a fine record.

Ah yes, the "Testimonial Dinner" compilation! As I recall, it includes:
1."Earn Enough for Us", performed by Freedy Johnston – 3:29 2."Senses Working Overtime", performed by Spacehog – 3:52 3."All You Pretty Girls", performed by Crash Test Dummies – 4:15 4."Wake Up", performed by The Verve Pipe – 4:04 5."Making Plans For Nigel", performed by The Rembrandts - 5:03 6."Dear God", performed by Sarah McLachlan – 3:58 7."The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul", performed by Rubén Blades – 4:53 8."Another Satellite", performed by P. Hux – 4:20 9."25 O'Clock", performed by They Might Be Giants – 4:05 10."The Good Things", performed by Terry and the Lovemen – 4:42 11."Statue of Liberty", performed by Joe Jackson – 3:05
Okay, that is a big fat lie. I did not "recall" that, I "Wikipedia-ed" it! Christ, only Pellepennan/Pelle/Per is enough of an XTC geek to remember the entire track listing and running times! Oh, and I mean "XTC geek" in the nicest possible way!
But here's a question. Which of the above is your favorite rendition? I choose "Dear God" by Sarah McLachlan!

Little did I know that there are/were some very intriguing artists on that album. Freedy Johnston, Ruben Blades, Joe Jackson...wow. If someone has uploaded the album to YouTube, I know what I'll be listening to while making supper tonight. Thanks, simpleton.
P.S. I'll get back to you on a favorite.

Sarah's "Dear God" or Ruben Blades "Man Who Sailed..." in a tie for favourite for me.
Why is it that when I hear the middle of Spacehog's SWOT I start imagining myself waiting for my hamburger and beer order at RainForest Cafe at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas???

Hey there peggs; thanks for the welcome. I'd tried for a couple of years to enter the Ape fray, as it were, but could never register successfully. XTC are one of the few bands I care about to the point of silliness (and there are a few of us aren't there!) so I'm glad to finally be in your midst. Yeah, Nonsuch is my fave, although I should have added Apple Venus. If it had more of DG's sonic footprints on it, it would be a no-brainer.

After listening to the available tracks of A Testimonial Dinner on YouTube, I'm sorry to say I was a bit disappointed. I was so looking forward to hearing Ruben Blades and Joe Jackson (Freedy Johnston isn't available). Their songs were OK but that's about it. The one that took me by surprise is The Verve Pipe's, Wake Up. I don't especially care for that song but the sonic quality of the Pipe's version perked up my ears. Oh well, I guess I'll just stick with the tried and true originals.

In my CD rack I now have about 36 inches of XTC stuff. and not all of the stuff fits inthere. ( Like Coat and The warbles collection. )
I must do a little review of it all...
