My father's name is actually Maurice, but no one calls him "Mow-reeese." family spelled it like that but pronounce it like the typical "Morris" name. I guess my great-grandmother hated names that you could add "y" to and make another name, and my grandmother mostly followed it too. My grandmother, Naomi, confessed that her mother would be quite upset that most everyone at her nursing home called her "Nomy."
