I thought I would try adding a new thread at least I don't think there's one quite like this and see if there's any interest. I'm wondering anyone would like to share occasionally when they learn something they find interesting or unusual or amusing.
As an example I use a phone app to match photos I take on hikes to the species ID. I photograph a lot of plants flowers and fungus. I learned that the wild geranium in the area is also with some unusual names like Herb Robert and stinking Bob. I wonder what Bob did and who Bob is that he had such a ignominious moniker given to a plant like that It seems so insulting and it's a pretty flower too.
Anyway I thought a pretty flower called stinking Bob was pretty funny. Here is what it says and yes I know Wikipedia is not infallible.
Geranium robertianum, commonly known as herb-Robert, red robin, death come quickly, storksbill, fox geranium, stinking Bob, squinter-pip (Shropshire), crow's foot, or (in North America) Roberts geranium, is a common species of cranesbill native to Europe and parts of Asia, North America, and North Africa. Charming!

Sorry to hear that That's pretty nasty. And If you will forgive the attempt at levity...no gold watch? No big clock and no cigar either. Successive Tory governments have reduced my redundancy package. Mine has been reduced by £60k over the years. But remember, we're all in it together......not.

It's fine. You can only deal with what is in front of you. And shake your head as to why people keep voting to be disadvantaged. It's a form of self harming.

I learned previously that we have American Wintergreen growing nearest which makes for a yummy snack on the trail if he recognize it. They are red berries and they taste like wintergreen also known as tea berries.

Okay I didn't learn this anytime recently In fact probably like 25 something years ago but did you know that tigers can fart white powdery clouds? I thought it was the funniest thing ever as a I don't know a teenager or preteen when I went to the zoo and saw a tiger pacing back and forth and there's a little sign in the cage saying be aware I guess it's a marking behavior or something territorial maybe but they turned around and I looked like they farted talcum powder. To a preteen or teen boy and even now that was pretty f****** funny.

There's a plant called starflower that grows in the woods and it superficially looks like Indian cucumber root when the cucumber root is not a mature plant. I saw both today. The cucumber root is supposedly edible with a root tasting like cucumber. Haven't tried it yet. They are not common plants. Rarely see either of them. Cucumber root looks really funky when mature. The immature cucumber root does not have that second level with the berry-like things at least the one I saw today. Not my photos just found online but for comparison: Cucumber root Starflower Also I learned last year and saw more examples of today American chestnut trees still exist but they don't often get Big enough to produce chestnuts before the blight gets them and then they regrow from the roots.

Pink lady slipper orchids require acidic soil and can live for many years. I saw it once before and then after a number of hundreds of miles of hiking finally saw it again this time a couple dozen on a ravine in the woods. They're very pretty. These are my photos:
