I do love The Dan but I find most of the albums (with the exception of Aja) rather chokka with what McCartney would call "work songs". Moments of genius interspersed with hmmmm.

The alternate guitar solos on "Peg" (15:50 in) are worth the price of admission.

Thanks for the link, Jeff. I think I saw part of that documentary on Netflix a while back. It's good to see it again.
I've been a fan of the Dan since first hearing Do It Again on the radio in '72 or '73. Their sound was so different from what was available in the small town America that I lived in. Listening to Can't Buy A Thrill for the first time was like learning about a secret society where everyone was hip and cool and little bit dangerous, and it was amazing.
Those feelings haven't diminished much either. Every time I put on a Steely Dan record I'm transported a club in the East Village circa 1977 where that secret society held its weekly meetings.
When I'm not sure what to listen to I put on a Steely Dan record and all's well with the world.

First time I heard the Dan I was in my older sisters car, drining around leicester sqaure ( in those days you could) and heard reelin in the years. One of the songs Fagen most hates playing I understand!

They do absolutely nothing for me. I think of them as a muso's band. All brain and no heart. But that's just me. However I actually do like Reelin' in the Years......

No, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Horses for courses I suppose.

The only band whose out put would only lead me to skip one track ( and that's a cover version!)from Do it again right through to the end of Gaucho.

I'll let you SEE what all the fuss is about, Don. If this isn't The Bomb: someone in a Facebook Steely Dan group posted my attempt at transcribing this song to Steely Dan musical director and lead guitarist Jon Herrington, who corrected and expanded my humble attempt into the real friggin' thing! Read 'em & weep, punks! DEACON BLUES by Donald Fagen & Walter Becker chord chart by Jon Herrington Copyright ©1977 ABC Dunhill Music * All Rights Reserved[Jeff Truzzi and all of the other guitar guys-I sent this to Jon and he corrected it but he put the correction in RED which doesn't show up here. If you want me to email you the red highlighted chords- just send me an email at susan@jonherington.com]--Intro-- Cmaj7 * Gadd2/B (I prefer "add" to "sus" for these chords (from low to high, voiced B A D G) Bbmaj7 * Fadd2/A Dmaj7 * Aadd2/C# Cmaj7 * Gadd2/B Ebmaj7 E7(#9) --Verse A-- G6 (okay once horns enter, but guitar plays G6 or, more accurately, Emi/G, just 3 notes, G, B, E, from low to high throughout) F6 (same here, guitar plays F6 or Dmi/F) G/A * F13 (Here the rhythm section plays the full F13 chord) F13 G6 F6 G/A * D9 D9 Fmaj7 E7(b9) Am7 Bb13 E7 B7 Bm7(b5) * E7 Bm7(b5) * E7(#9) --Verse B-- G6 F6 G/A * F13 F13 G6 F6 G/A * A13 A13 Fmaj7 E7(b9) Am7 Gm7 * F#7 Fmaj7 Cadd2/E D9 F/G --Chorus A-- Am7 Em7 Dm7 Cmaj7 Bbmaj7 Am * Em/G F#7(b5) * Fmaj7 Cadd2/E * Fmaj7 --Chorus B-- Am7 Em7 Dm7 Cmaj7 Bbmaj7 Am * Em/G F#7(b5) * Fmaj7 Cadd2/E * Fmaj7 Am7 Em7 --Intro B-- Dmaj7 * Aadd2/C# Cmaj7 * Gadd2/B First ending: Ebmaj7 E7(#9) (Repeat Verse & Chorus, but take second ending on repeat) Second ending: Bbmaj7 * B7(#9) --Solo-- Cmaj7 Em7 A13 D7(#5#9) G13 B7(#9) Em7 A13 Fmaj7 * F#7(#9) Gmaj7 * B7(#9) Cmaj7 Em7 A13 D7(#5#9) G13 B7(#9) Em7 A13 Fmaj7 * F#7(#9) Gmaj7 * B7(#9) (Repeat Intro) [The song continues but everything after this point is a repeat of one sort or another of an earlier section (careful of the D9s and A13s - they can fool you!]
