Here is a fascinating interview with a former Google employee that may give you pause.

A couple of salient points in the interview: at 3:53 Mr. Harris has a rather amazing statistic, and at 5:02 the Q&A is a confirmation of the addictive nature of technology.

I don't have a smart phone, so yes, I am smarter by default.

I'm not a member of almost all social media groups. I have only a few contacts and have most notifications turned off. Don't use it for work purposes and turn it off when I go to bed. If it ever gets anywhere near intrusive I turn it off. Not a problem for me. My kids however.............

Race to the bottom of the brainstem. I think I saw them opening for Porcupine Tree once.
Thanks Peggs. I have avoided all mobile devices because I know it will use time I don't want to give it. I do think it can sever the connection to your environment, as the clip pointed out. Not having one is a privilege, in that I don't need to be available most of the time or commute to work etc. Not having internet and tv for over a month did open up a great deal of time, I missed most of it very little. I'm trying to remember that NOW when the media's siren song prompts compulsive behavior.

It's addictive behaviour that's the problem not the phone. And the users inability to interpret information. But that's the media and people in general. The good thing about the internet is that you can find alternative viewpoints other than that provided through newspapers and TV. Phones are Smart in general and people aren't. Blame the people not the phones.

I do think it's similar to the way junk food is made to override our better judgement, there are triggers in tech design that encourage unconscious or compulsive behavior. You just have to know your own weaknesses, and act accordingly.

Did your kids grow up with computers and hand-held technology, so that smart phones were a natural progression in their electronic evolution? I truly don't understand why people want to spend time being consumed by their phones.

Yes they are of that generation.
They would probably be puzzled by some of the things we did in our day. It's their job to annoy us. As it will be their kids job to annoy them. And on it goes.

My new phone is too smart for it's own good. Have no idea how to use some aspects of it. But calls, texts and internet is all I probably need. And I have a T.V. with hundreds of channels I dont need. More is sometimes less.

My landline is smarter than I am. That problem is easily solved, Miles--ditch your landline.

You need a landline if you want the interweb.

Not necessarily. I don't have a landline anymore--I get my internet through my cable company.

I have cable too but different rules here. But I think it will change soon.It may be changing now. But Richard Branson needs all the money he can get to fly to the moon and run 40 year old trains. Bless 'im.
