Here's a question for y'all:
How do you generally listen to music? An entire album at a time or turn on a device of some sort and listen to whatever plays (ie: radio, Pandora, iTunes, etc.)
I go through periods of both. For about the past month it's been the latter. I've been busy with a creative project (it sounds loftier than 'hobby') and my local classical radio station and Pandora have been providing the soundtrack.

I still like whole albums over singles. It is more like like spending some time with an artist, rather than getting a post card in the mail. I'm not adverse to skipping a song or 2 if they are my least favorites. If I am in a "singles" mood, I listen to various music compilations, some commercial, some made by friends.

I second what Miles wrote. I usually listen to full albums. About the only radio I listen to is a show called the Power Pop Show out of San Fransisco (not much of a radio selection in southern Ohio, I am sad to report, unless I wish to listen to country--and I don't).

Don't listen to music much these days. If I do it's just random playlists on my phone or youtube stuff. But I've usually got a song going in my head most of the time.

I am trying to get back to the purity of the whole album experience. However much of the time I am listening to playlists, random shuffles etc etc.

Several years on and I still listen primarily to full albums. I just got Paul Steel's new release April and II: Carousel Kites. I was part of his Pledge Music campaign, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he put the names of all his pledges in the liner notes. I have been immortalized.

YouTube is good for rabbit-holing from one song to another. An exercise in controlled nostalgia, in my case.
I play an LP on my turntable most days, usually several times over before putting it away. I make regular trips to used record stores, where the vast majority of original albums are still cheaper than CDs.

I can't listen to a whole album. I tend to skip tracks. And I don't have the staying power to persevere with new stuff I haven't listened to before. So I mostly fly around tracks until I bore of it. And only return to this routine weeks later. I mostly avoid listening to music with headphones on after a good drink because of the singing and likelihood of pushing the volume up to max setting my tinnitus off. Pardon.

It may be just me, but I listen to tracks, in order, without skipping. On some albums, you need to listen to the entire album to understand the "concept" (Skylarking as a prime example). Most modern "pop" stuff don't follow any regime, though there may be a format or formula. But, I tend to listen to albums from start to finish. But, that's just me!

But if you already know the concept.......

But if you already know the concept....... You may "know" the concept, but it's just like reading a book... you may miss a crucial chapter if you skip one.

I have been listening to more random singles on YouTube lately--partly this is because the cd player on my computer is kind of crappy and hard to load. In my car I still tend to listen to full albums.

Almost entirely random shuffles. I like albums but I also like eclectic mixes and it's easiest just to put my music library on shuffle and get surprised by something I haven't heard in a long time. Like, "huh, was Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, actually good? Why do I only have the one album?"
Annoyingly, because of the way my car plays stored music from my USB drive (no CD player in my car) I listen to many album tracks in alphabetical order.
Two or three months ago I actually bought an affordable portable CD player with skip protection, a car power cord and Blue Tooth connectivity so I could "listen to to albums" again- but I never got around to hooking it up. Still sitting in it's package.

Put that stuff in the car and go for a nice drive like your parents have been doing, Nonsuch Ned ! I usually buy whole albums, however I have purchased singles here and there along the way... three by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu that I love, have no idea what they are about and probably am good with just those three songs from her greatest hits album for the rest of my life.
